Local Small Business Highlight

Real Deals

Bucky Beeman and Dylan Carty met Ashley and Andrew early on in their entrepreneurial journey. They had an idea to open a store called "Real Deals" which had been run in other states across the Midwest. Ashley was extremely excited to bring this store to Rochester. The Design District of Rochester is where we helped them get a location after looking around and coming back to this space multiple times. The affordability of an old warehouse and being close to other businesses of scale was the deciding factor. Never could we have guessed that Ashley would be this busy and successful in such a short time. Ashley shared that there were many hurdles and roadblocks such as road construction, COVID-19 while getting into business, but overall she has enjoyed it despite having many obstacles early on. Social media live streams were how she combated the issues and made sales while people were at home and not working during the pandemic. These live streams built a community and fanbase through Facebook and Instagram where people could communicate about what products they should buy and why. These online supporters helped Ashley grow to the point where she reached out to Bucky and Dylan with a huge vision that she had for a new location. After a short time and lots of negotiation, they secured a piece of land for a fair deal. At this current moment, Ashley is talking to general contractors and architects to get ready to turn dirt on the new store location. They will be leaving the store on 6th Ave and this site will be for lease and hopefully a springboard for another small business into the community. Come next spring or summer Ashley will have a brand new beautiful store to provide great products to the community. We are so thankful to have the opportunity to work with Ashley and Andrew to get to the next level of business. We are fortunate that they have decided that we are the best firm for them to work with.

Victoria Family

Nick Pompeian met Natalie Victoria about nine years ago at a Post Bulletin networking event at the Rochester Golf and Country Club. I had just got started in commercial real estate and my Dad had mentioned that I needed to go and build my network. Back in those days, networking events are how we met people in hopes of building relationships and our business. I knew Natalie from the many dinners that my family had at the original Victoria’s which was in the Brackenridge Plaza on 2nd Street SW. However, I never had spoken to her in a professional setting such as this.  I will never forget speaking with Natalie that day. One of the first questions she asked was, “Are you working with your dad now?” I remember nervously saying yes. She responded by asking me for my business card, which I vividly remember nervously grabbing out of my coat pocket to give to her. Her final response to me was, “I am going to call you.”

I quickly found out that she and her partner were looking for a building as they wanted to start a bar. I knew exactly the building, and after meeting on several occasions, Natalie and Sid Victoria and Christine and Eric Stahl decided to make an offer on the former Hight and Randall building located at 10 3rd Street SW. To make a long story short, that offer was accepted, and the Tap House became a staple in downtown Rochester. Because the Tap House was such a success, a few years later I had the pleasure of working with Natalie and Christine again and represented them in the purchasing of a lot on west circle drive where the Tap House West End sits today.

Throughout the years, I have had the pleasure of building a real friendship with Natalie and the others in her family. We regularly talk about the kids, what they are up to, what vacations they are going on, etc… Natalie has also played a prominent role in my personal life. I met my wife at the Tap House on November 21, 2017. I held her surprise 30th birthday at the Tap House, which I later proposed to her that night. We have had our annual office dinner at Victoria’s for years. Victoria’s served the luncheon at my Dad’s funeral. We have had many family gatherings over the Holidays at Victoria’s. The countless happy hours and late-night beers at the Tap House and Tap House West End provided some wonderful memories. For many of life’s big and memorable events, Natalie and her family have been there serving up their hospitality and love.

I will never forget the moment I met Natalie. I often have thought to myself why, at that time, would someone that is established want to call a young kid like me who had no experience in real estate. The answer is very clear; it was because she saw the potential and wanted to see the next generation grow! And that is exactly what Natalie and Sid are doing with their new restaurant. They are taking a chance on the next generation which I guarantee will be well worth it.

In closing, I want to say thank you, Natalie, Sid, and Victoria's family. Thank you for taking a chance on a 24-year-old, who had no experience, no resume of sales, and no business working with someone such as yourselves. Thank you for helping me and my family in some of life’s most exciting and difficult times by being there for us when we needed you most. Most of all, thank you for taking a chance on family, being patient, and educating the next generation on how to build a successful business. I am forever grateful to you and your family, and I am so excited to see Sorellina’s come to life. Congratulations a million times over and thank you for all you have done for me, my family, and my business! I am looking forward to continuing the work we have started and built on the strong and meaningful relationship we have with one another.

Taco JED
Dylan Carty had the opportunity of meeting Steve Dunn the owner of Taco Jed in September of 2017. Steve had been looking for locations in Rochester, Mankato, St cloud, and Duluth to start his new concept taco restaurant. Steve was not from Rochester and had minimal market knowledge but he had built successful restaurant concepts before so he knew what he was looking for. Steve has always joked with Dylan that he picked him to help him find his location because he is a big Bob Dylan fan and it just made sense given his name. Steve and Dylan spent a lot of time together identifying locations and putting together market data before Steve selected Rochester as the site for his 1st location. In October of 2018, Steve opened Taco Jed at 808 S Broadway. Anyone who knows Steve knows he is very active in the restaurant and loves his customers like family and his broker is no different! Steve and Dylan remain good friends and are always in talks about future growth and possible expansion for Taco Jed!

Tyrol Ski & Sport
Austin Braatz chose to highlight Tyrol Ski & Sports, a local small business, who has been supplying outdoor enthusiasts in Rochester with gear since 1965. As one of my favorite stores in town, I go there for all my snowboarding needs. I appreciate how knowledgeable and friendly their staff has been to me over the years, and I jumped at the opportunity to highlight them! They of course specialize in ski and snowboarding products, but also have a great selection of winter clothing. If you’re looking to get some gear this winter I highly recommend checking out what the experienced staff at Tyrol has to offer.

Compassion Acre

Gunnar Grimsrud chose to highlight Compassion Acre Congratulations to Allison Kocak for following her dreams and purchasing her very own commercial building for her doggy daycare business!

I met Allison around a year ago because she inquired about one of the commercial buildings that RGI had listed near the YMCA. We toured it, discussed pricing, and ultimately decided that the location would not work out for her. However, Allison gave me the great honor of representing her as her Realtor as she continued her search for her dream location.

Little did we know, this was the start of a grueling 10-month search that was full of rejection, failed negotiations, and heartbreak. However, Allison and I did not view it that way as each rejection and blocked road was a learning experience for us that gave us determination and insight to keep pushing forward.

Eventually, nearly a year into our search we finally found the perfect spot on Commerce Drive in southwest Rochester. The owner was Jerry Fischer and his wife Ruth; a couple who has had a strong presence in the dog boarding industry for several decades. They were able to see Allison’s vision and dream for the location and after many weeks of negotiation, we were able to close on the sale of 3902 Commerce Ct.

I am so incredibly proud of Allison for her hard work and determination even through the toughest of times. We faced obstacles that would cause most people to quit but she stayed focused on the goal all along. I am honored to call her a friend, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for her, her family, and her business.

Ichi Tokyo

Nate Carty chose Ichi Tokyo as my restaurant to highlight this month because they are the best spot in town for fresh sushi! All you can eat sushi for lunch and dinner is a no-brainer if you're hungry and looking for some creative rolls. They have a huge menu of different hibachi dishes as well if sushi is not your thing. Not to mention their customer service is top-notch, as well as the cleanliness of their restaurants. I try to get there every other week, if not once a week, and have some of their great sushi, and I suggest you try it as well!
