Educational information

  1. Make sure your fans are switched to the reverse or clockwise position, which will blow warm air down to the floor for enhanced energy efficiency and comfort
  2. Cover windows in plastic for efficiency to keep warm air in or cold air out
  3. Free sand/sat mixtures available near the YMCS downtown, off 1st Ave and at the Northbrook Shopping Center
  4. Check snowblower (gas and oil) (make sure it starts) replace spark plugs, lubricate bearings, check for damage and check tire pressure
  5. Unhook hose (make sure waters off) and store them away for the winter to prevent cracks, preserve shape and prolong life.
  6. Drain water from outdoor pipes, valves and sprinklers heads to protect against pipe bursts
  7. Pink styrofoam insulating around doors you don’t use much to keep heat inside and cool air outside
  8. Check light-bulbs outside property’s so that they work (you don’t have to change them in the cold) Good illumination will help minimize the chance of accidents on icy walkways or night
  9. Check drainage inside the house and garage to make sure everything is working properly
  10. Clean your chimney and order/stock firewood
  11. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  12. Replace screen doors with storm doors and window screens with storm windows
  13. Examine wooden window frames for signs of rot or decay
  14. Check for drafts around windows and doors Caulk inside and out, when necessary
  15. Check for cracked or broken glass, or gaps and repair or replace them in needed
  16. Trim overgrown branches back from around the house and electric wires to prevent iced over or power problems
  17. Aerate the lawn, reseed, and apply a wintering fertilizer to promote deep-root growth come spring.
  18. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems.
  19. Clean and dry patio furniture and cover with tarp or store inside a shed or garage.
  20. Check hand rails on exterior stairs to make sure they're well secured
  21. Move your snow blower and shovels to the front of the garage or shed to easy access.
  22. Sharpen ice scraper and inspect snow shovels to make sure they're ready for another season of work.
  23. Remove air conditioners from windows for cover them with insulated liners, to prevent drafts
  24. Flush a hot water heater tank to remove sediment, and check the pressure relief valve to make sure it's in the proper working order.
  25. Examine exposed ducts in the attic, basement, and crawl space, and use a sealant to plug up any leaks
  26. Check for missing, damaged or warped shingles and replace, as necessary before you get stuck with a leak
  27. Check the gutters and downspout for proper fastening, and re-secure if loose or sagging. The weight of snow and ice can pull gutters off the house
  28. Clean gutters of any debris and make sure the downspout extends away from the house by at least 5 feet to prevent flooding of the foundation and water damage from snowmelt
  29. Clean debris from garage driveway and backyard patio/deck to prevent mold and blockage of drains
  30. Ensure all vents and openings are covered to prevent insects, birds, and rodents from getting inside to nest in a warm place.
  31. Bring grills and tools inside or cover with tarp to prevent rusting or animals living inside of them for the winter.
